Greetings from the Principal!

Peggy KnuthAt DC, we pride ourselves on giving our students real world learning that translates into success in college and in the workplace. Learning as we define it occurs inside and outside the classroom. In the classroom, students are expected to pay attention, to listen to each other, to ask questions to clarify their understanding of key concepts and to show evidence of mastery of core skills on homework, projects and tests. Outside the classroom, students are encouraged to take healthy risks and grow in confidence and maturity. Still, the goal of a Catholic school education is more ambitious than academic excellence or career fulfillment. The mission statement for Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit professes that we are "an integral extension of the educational ministry of the Church, which continues the teaching mission of Jesus" There is a seamless continuity between Jesus' invitation to "come and see" and "follow me" in chapter one of John's Gospel and the inquiry-based, discovery-oriented learning that we have and are still promoting at Divine Child. We have always been a school that prays together, competes in athletic contests together, travels abroad together, and works on community service projects together.

As we chart new horizons for our school, we are convinced that we can become the premiere STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Catholic school in our region: a school where teachers and students integrate mathematics and science across a more rigorous curriculum, a school where students and corporate partners bring to life externships that make school more relevant for our students, a school where parents are enjoined to fulfill their role as the primary educators of their children in a world that desperately needs solutions to global problems such as a lack of potable water and increasing shortages of food. At DC, we know that we are training leaders whose moral compass will unerringly point to justice, compassion and truth. Our faculty takes seriously the mandate to "teach as Jesus taught." We model the hard work, active listening and personal accountability that we expect of our students. We also model faith, hope, and love.

I recently asked one of our juniors in the DC Investment Club how she picks a good stock. She said that four factors stood out for her: price to earnings (P to E), longevity, potential for growth and management. I thought I would borrow her model to illustrate the lasting value of a Divine Child education.

P to E: A Divine Child education costs our families $1000 per credit hour. In the greater Detroit metropolitan area, families pay as much as $2000-$4000 for a college preparatory Catholic education. Our 2009 graduating class earned over $7 million dollars in scholarships to selective regional and national colleges. We consider the price to earnings of a DC education to be soundest investment a family can make.

Longevity: Our DC stock has soared in the 51 years since we opened our doors as a diocesan Catholic school. We have been great stewards of our physical plant and have passed the savings of staying on one campus for a half century to our parents.

Potential for Growth: Our enrollment of over 880 students has us making use of every available classroom during the academic year. Over the last two summers we have hosted our own students and students from a number of local schools in enrichment programs ranging from math camp to ACT Prep.

Management: We take pride in the fact that we are the largest diocesan school in the state. When we describe our management, we call attention to the Church of the Divine Child, Fr Jim Bilot our pastor.

We are proud of what we do and invite you to stop by for a visit. There are a number of opportunities for you to be on campus and take a closer look at Divine Child High School. Our Open Houses are October 22, 2009 and February 11, 2010. We also offer a Discovery Day which is an afternoon at DCHS where an 8th grader will follow a typical freshman schedule. Discovery Day is October 9, 2009 beginning at 11:45 and ending at 2:30. Finally, we offer a shadowing program where your sons or daughters are invited to partner with a current DCHS freshman for a typical day at our school.

Thank you for taking the time to view our website. Please come and visit us on campus.
